Rigour in SBQ

Students sometimes have this comment from their teacher: “Your answer lacks rigour…”. Students interpret this as them having to write more. But the question begs: how much more and what to write to ensure the rigour?

Here are some tips to help you to ensure rigour in your answer: remember PEE!

Every paragraph of an answer should have 3 elements:

  1. Point: Answer the question and phrase the question into a statement and write out your point i.e inference/message
  • If the question is a close-ended question ; if  the issue is already defined, ensure that your answer sticks to the issue n
  • If the question is open-ended, u can the define the inference/message/issue. A good tip  is to link the issue to the topical question/ assertion statement
  1. Evidence : quote from the source. Make sure that you quote enough evidence that the marker does not need to refer back to the source to understand how your evidence allows you to arrive at your point.
  1. Explain your evidence : this is likened to the ‘mini-conclusion’ of your explanation. What you can do is to paraphrase your evidence and seek to link the evidence to the point.
